Home Office Design & Furniture

As more cars pour onto our roads and journey times to work increase so more and more people are taking up home-working, at least for part of the week. A home office therefore becomes essential. One solution is to put a home office in the garden, if you have one. The other solution is to cobble together some space in the house or redevelop a garage. The problem with space in the house is that it raises several knock-on issues. A bedroom may not be ideal especially if you are expecting clients to visit. The sitting room, or drawing room in larger houses, may provide some unused space but any desk or chair needs to look like the rest of the furniture. Ordinary office furniture is unsuitable. At the same time all cabling needs to be hidden.

Most people try to find some under-utilised downstairs space, like a spare sitting room; but this may be a room enjoyed by the children as their computer and games den. Home Office Work Spaces Work Spaces - a book on simple ideas for creating home offices - is available from Amazon Books

The principal problem often boils down to how one room may serve the two quite different needs of the family. A common solution is to have two or more computers on a small netwok sharing Broadband if it is available. One computer (or more) is for the children, the other for the working parent. Does the office have to allow for a sofa or seating for visitors, perhaps even a low table for mini conferences? What sort of storage or shelving is required? Do you intend to have a printer and a scanner? Is your VDU a tower? How much space will be required for all these items. It's important to know dimensions at the outset. So, please have these available for when we meet.

"Practical advice on creating sumptuous, hardworking office environments that don't detract from, but actually complement your home. Home offices don't have to be eyesores that require the door always to be kept shut. More importantly, if your office shares a room with another family activity, it need not hide behind a screen.

The offices featured in the guide are examples that anyone can be proud to showcase centre stage in their own home" - Amazon Review.

An office you won't want to leave. By Paula Robinson

Excerpt from The Daily Telegraph 11th March 2008
"For anyone working from home, a garden office offers a pleasant discipline and routine, and a chance to escape the hustle and bustle of the household. The structure needs to be properly insulated, have power, telecommunications, heating (either underfloor or a convection heater with a thermostat), and you may want to connect it to water and waste utilities. This is an ideal opportunity to try eco-building materials (especially insulation), and alternative energy sources (solar panels in particular). Think about whether you need a path from the house to the office, or a decked area outside it".

"Be sure to include plenty of windows in the design, as daylight will enhance your office. If the idea of working in nature appeals, consider installing folding and sliding doors that can open up completely in summer. Go a step further and have a structure that blends with its surroundings and that's attractive to wildlife: either grow your own (visit www.livingroofs.org for advice on how to go about it) or buy readymade. Alternative Space offers garden offices with a "living roof", which is also a good insulator in winter and summer. However, if a sleek, contemporary design statement is more your style, have a look at the eco-friendly Qube garden office.

Unlike a home office, the garden office's interior doesn't have to blend with the rest of your home. Instead, it can be a true expression of what you need from a working environment, tailored just for you: conservative, artistic, dramatic, quirky, minimalist, or whatever takes your fancy".
